Riverfront Stadium’s Successful Grand Opening After a Year-Long Wait
On May 11, 2021, a little over a year after the original opening date for Wichita’s newest baseball stadium, the first home game of its team took place.
The new Riverfront Stadium Ballpark is a tribute to Wichita’s storied history in baseball and home to the Wichita Wind Surge, a Texas League Baseball team and a Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
Tuesday’s game was the first major league-affiliated baseball game in Wichita since 2007. Even though the game ended in a 3-2 loss for the Wichita Wind Surge team to the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the opening night was a success. The energy of the crowd was undeniable, and the feel of the community getting together after a hard, long year ruled by the waves of a pandemic was much awaited.
We couldn’t be more proud to have played a part in the construction of our city’s new $75-million dollar stadium. To meet the contract deadlines established by the City of Wichita, our all-star team managed to design and build the stadium at a blinding pace of just 16 months. A big congratulations to JE Dunn, SJCF Architects, DRL Group and Professional Engineering Consultants. It was a pleasure working with you all!
In addition to the Wichita Surge games, the stadium will host outdoor concerts, festivals, community and family-friendly events. We look forward to years of making the best of our city’s beautiful new facility.
